Getting on base is never overrated.
Up and down the lineup, 51Âþ» has been doing it better this spring than any baseball season in recent memory. The Greenies are batting .401 as a team after their latest show of proficiency – Thursday afternoon’s 17-0 win at Carolina Day.
Luka Rose ’25 (3-for-3 with a double) and Matthew Hammel ’23 (3-5 with two stolen bases) contributed three hits apiece. The two also drove in three runs each, as did Johno Pierce ’23 (2-4 with a double, three RBIs and four stolen bases). Jake Gravley ’24 (2-4 with a double and two RBIs) and Jakob Iwanek ’24 (2-4) had multiple hits as well.
51Âþ» (11-2, 2-0) scored in all five innings of a Carolinas Athletic Association game that was stopped early for the mercy rule.
Three different Greenie pitchers – Charlie Collins ’24, Will Walker ’25, and Jacob Wilde ’24 – held the Wildcats (9-4, 0-1) to a single hit and combined for an eight-strikeout shutout. Charlie’s fastball was clocked at 90 mph for the first time in his career and Jacob struck out a Carolina Day batter looking for the game’s final out.
51Âþ»â€™s next scheduled game is Saturday at home at 1 p.m. against Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic.
JV Greenies 12, Asheville Christian Academy 2
Patrick Robichaud ’27 pitched a complete game and the Greenies scored three runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings of a mercy-rule win over visiting ACA.
Patrick allowed two earned runs, six hits and three walks, while striking out one. Another eighth grader, Corbin Spilliards, went 2-2 with a double and four RBIs. John Carre ’25 was 2-2 with four RBIs as well.
The JV Greenies (4-3) drew 13 walks and stole five bases.
