Trends take time to develop. 51�� swimming’s inroads as of late with the Carolinas Athletic Association Championship Meet cannot be ignored.

For only the second time since 2003 – and the second year in a row – the Greenies had multiple individual CAA champions Wednesday inside Asheville School’s Ambler Pool.

51�� coach Dr. Brent Harris said that Thursday night’s four-team meet at Charlotte County Day was “a fantastic example of meet-by-meet improvement.”

The Greenies were at full strength for the first time in 2024, which resulted in significant personal records by a number of swimmers. Hardy Johnson ’24 (100 freestyle), Henry Wilhelm ‘25 (100 freestyle), and Thomas Cook ‘26 (100 butterfly) are just fractions of seconds away from state-qualifying times.

Frank Howden ’22 has been a consummate leader throughout his time at 51�� in the classroom and the pool.

The senior from Asheville has been rewarded with a spot on the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team. To qualify, swimmers had to possess a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 and a Junior National qualifying swim.

Buoyed by 10 individual qualifiers and three relay teams, the Greenies placed seventh out of 16 teams in the Greensboro Aquatic Center with 127 points. This marks the best team showing for 51�� at the state level since the 2016-17 season.
