WILMINGTON – Jamal Hutchison ’23 stood on a putting green Monday at the Country Club of Landfall, beaming with a golden ticket to the U.S. Amateur in his hands.

The 51�� alumnus knew nothing less than red numbers would do to become one of 312 golfers to advance past the second and final stage of qualifying. Despite closing with a bogey, Jamal shot two-under 70 to clear his last hurdle for the U.S. Amateur, which is August 10-16 at the Merion (Pa.) Golf Club, just outside of Philadelphia.

The 51�� alumnus will be part of the field for the 65th North Carolina Amateur after shooting 1-over 73 Tuesday at a qualifier in Mooresville. This advances him to next week’s tournament, scheduled for June 11-14 at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro.

The golf course was everything campus was not – calm and quiet – on the same afternoon as a Head of School Holiday. Led by co-individual medalist Hank Bradley ‘27 (38), the Greenies kept rolling through the Carolinas Athletic Association with a team score of 156 in a 9-hole match, followed by Asheville Christian Academy (158), Carolina Day (171), and Asheville School (186).

With few exceptions, 51�� golf has been near the top of the leaderboard in every NCISAA state tournament played over the past decade. The program has won three state championships during that time (2010, 2012, and 2014) and been a runner-up on five occasions (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019).
